Switching guide · Lifetime ISA

How to switch your lifetime isa.

Someone in a higher-fee LISALifetime ISAAn ISA for under-40s. Use for first home (under £450k) or retirement (60+). 25% government bonus on contributions up to £4,000/year. — typically anything 0.45% AMC and up. What follows is illustrative — the sequence a typical switch goes through, and the parts the receiving provider handles for you.

The typical sequence.

  1. 01

Open the new LISA at a lower-fee provider.

  2. 02

Initiate a LISA transfer through the new provider — same form as ISA transfers.

  3. 03

Government bonus and HMRC LISA flag move with the money. The 25% bonus accumulated to date isn’t lost.

  4. 04

Typically 2–4 weeks for the transfer to settle.

Gotchas.

  • !LISA transfers must go provider-to-provider. Withdrawing instead triggers the 25% withdrawal penalty (which can be more than the bonus received, since it’s 25% of the gross amount).
  • !If a first-home purchase is imminent, transfer timing matters — solicitors typically want at least 4 weeks of clean LISA history at the new provider before accepting a withdrawal.
